The Detroit Lions are showcasing significant improvement as several players make notable strides this season. Head Coach Dan Campbell highlighted the outstanding development of tight end Sam LaPorta and linebacker Derrick Barnes during a recent interview on 97.1 The Ticket.
Campbell commended LaPorta for his all-around contributions on the field. “The first one I think of is Sam LaPorta,” he stated, emphasizing how the young tight end has elevated his game. LaPorta is not only responsible for catching passes but also plays a crucial role in blocking schemes, excelling in both run blocking and pass protection. While his receiving numbers reflect a minor decline from his impressive rookie season, LaPorta is still making an impact, currently averaging 4.1 receptions and 48.4 yards per game, and is the top-graded tight end in the NFL, according to Pro Football Focus.
Campbell also recognized the efforts of new tight ends coach Tyler Roehl, noting how essential he has been to LaPorta’s development. “He’s one of the first ones I think of,” Campbell mentioned when discussing the players who have progressed significantly.
On the defensive side, Campbell pointed to Derrick Barnes as another standout performer. After missing a large portion of the previous season due to a knee injury, Barnes has bounced back with impressive performances, securing a three-year, $24 million contract extension this year. He is contributing significantly on defense, playing nearly every snap alongside teammates Alex Anzalone and Jack Campbell. With a career-high three sacks and standing second on the team for tackles, Barnes is becoming a cornerstone of the Lions’ defense.
At 26 years old, Barnes is in his fifth NFL season, while LaPorta, at 24, is in his third. Both players have become instrumental in the Lions’ robust 5-2 start this season. Campbell noted, “They’re not young guys, but man, they’re growing into their prime,” highlighting the promising future ahead for both athletes and the team as a whole. With this ongoing development, the Lions look to continue their successful campaign, fueled by the growth of these key players.
