Lions reshuffle as LaPorta sidelined with back injury

The Detroit Lions face a significant challenge in their Super Bowl aspirations as they will likely be without one of their standout offensive players, tight end Sam LaPorta. Coach Dan Campbell confirmed on Friday that LaPorta underwent a procedure for a back injury that may sideline him for the remainder of the season.

“Sam did have a procedure, and he’s going to be out for a while, a while,” Campbell stated. “We would be fortunate to get him back at some point this season, but that chance is very, very slim.”

LaPorta’s injury occurred during a game against the Washington Commanders, leading to his placement on injured reserve the following week. He wrapped up the season with impressive stats, totaling 40 catches for 489 yards and three touchdowns.

In LaPorta’s absence, the Lions are left with a limited roster of tight ends. Brock Wright, who has been the second-string tight end throughout the season, has accumulated substantial playing time. However, the depth at the position appears thin. The team recently brought in veteran Ross Dwelley, who has seen limited offensive snaps this year, mainly contributing on special teams. Coach Campbell mentioned the potential elevation of veteran Anthony Firkser from the practice squad to bolster the lineup. Additionally, the team might utilize Dan Skipper in a jumbo tight end role to adapt their offensive schemes.

“We’ve still got Brock and there are things he can do, we’ve got Ross Dwelley, and we may bring Firkser this week,” Campbell noted. “We’ve got some versatility.”

Lions offensive coordinator John Morton expressed enthusiasm about the opportunity this presents. He acknowledged the challenge of replacing LaPorta’s unique skill set but sees it as a chance to be creative in game planning. “This gives everybody else some opportunities, and we have to be creative, which is the fun part,” Morton said. “I love figuring out things and creating mismatches.”

Looking ahead, Campbell reassured fans that LaPorta’s long-term prognosis remains positive. “The good news is the procedure went really well, long term,” he shared, instilling hope for both the player’s recovery and the Lions’ season moving forward.
