After a challenging 2023 season filled with injuries, Detroit Lions center Frank Ragnow reflected on his future in the wake of the NFC Championship Game loss to the San Francisco 49ers. Ragnow expressed the need to evaluate his physical health, stating, “I got to figure everything out… It takes a toll on you.” He emphasized the importance of ensuring he can be healthy not only as a player but also as a husband and father. Initially, he declared he would not retire, but by early June 2024, he announced his decision to step away from the game, leaving the Lions to reconsider their offensive line strategy.

The timing of Ragnow’s retirement created urgency for the Lions, as they had not adequately prepared for his departure. General manager Brad Holmes had previously spoken about the need to maintain a strong pipeline of talent on the offensive line, but the lack of a succession plan for Ragnow became evident as the team struggled without him. With two of the three starting spots on the offensive line in flux, the Lions face multiple challenges ahead of the offseason.

In light of these developments, Mike Payton of AtoZ Sports proposed a comprehensive plan to restore the offensive line to its former strength. He emphasized the immediate need for a left tackle, suggesting that the Lions target their future star in the first round of the 2026 draft. The health of left guard Christian Mahogany is also a critical concern, as competition intensifies for that position.

Payton’s most significant recommendation was to pursue Tyler Linderbaum, a highly-ranked center currently with the Baltimore Ravens. He argued that securing Linderbaum would be a transformative move for the Lions, as the stability of the offensive line largely hinges on the performance of its center. Linderbaum, who has consistently received top grades and multiple Pro Bowl selections since entering the league, will likely be in high demand when he hits free agency in March.

Interestingly, the Ravens did not exercise Linderbaum’s fifth-year option, setting the stage for a competitive bidding process in the offseason. The Lions, equipped with ample cap space following a possible restructuring of Jared Goff’s contract, are urged to make a formidable offer that would persuade Linderbaum to join their ranks.

This proactive approach could not only strengthen the offensive line but also signal the Lions’ commitment to building a resilient team moving forward. With a rich talent pool and a systematic plan for offensive line improvement, the Lions could position themselves as contenders in the coming seasons, igniting hope among fans for a brighter future.
