Lions’ Debutante Shines in Crucial Victory: What’s Next for the Team?

The LMU Lions women’s soccer team secured a 1-0 victory against Grand Canyon on Sunday afternoon at Sullivan Field. The decisive goal came from a penalty kick converted just before halftime by a player making her debut for the Lions. After a dynamic run into the penalty area, she drew a foul and stepped up to take the penalty twice, as the first effort was disallowed due to encroachment. Her successful conversion marked her fifth goal of the season.

In the second half, Grand Canyon was awarded a penalty kick, but Lions goalkeeper saved the day. Anticipating the shot, she dove to her left and made a crucial save, deflecting the ball away from danger. Throughout the match, she recorded a total of six saves and was instrumental in handling various dangerous crosses and through balls from the opposing team. This match marked her third career shutout at LMU and second this season.

Offensively, the Lions continued to create opportunities, particularly down the left side, where a key player made several threatening runs and delivered three well-placed balls that unfortunately went unconverted. Another midfielder stood out with her performance, contributing significantly to the team’s efforts.

Special recognition goes to those who played the full 90 minutes in the heat, including Rucker and Hoover. The Lions are now preparing for a lengthy road trip, with their next match scheduled against CSU Bakersfield on September 12. They will then face Cal State Fullerton on September 19, with both games available for live streaming on ESPN+.
