The 30-year-old inside linebacker recently spent time on the Denver Broncos’ practice squad after playing two games as a starter and contributing as a reserve this season. The Lions currently face a linebacker crisis, as Malcolm Rodriguez sustained a potentially serious knee injury during their recent victory against Chicago. Rodriguez had been stepping in for Alex Anzalone, who is on injured reserve due to a broken arm and is anticipated to be sidelined for at least another month. In addition, other veteran linebackers like Derrick Barnes and Jalen Reeves-Maybin are also dealing with injuries.
As the Lions prepare to host the Green Bay Packers on Thursday night, Alexander’s experience could prove crucial. The Lions currently lead the NFC with an impressive 11-1 record, and Alexander’s prior familiarity with Lions’ coach Dan Campbell—having played under him in New Orleans—could help him assimilate quickly into the team.
Throughout his career, Alexander has been a reliable player, starting in 90 out of 107 games across teams such as Tampa Bay, New Orleans, San Francisco, the New York Jets, Pittsburgh, and Denver. This season with the Broncos, he recorded eight tackles and forced a fumble. With a total of 448 career tackles, including 13.5 sacks, his addition could be key in maintaining the Lions’ formidable defensive line as they head into the crucial part of the season.
