Lilly Wachowski Steps Down From Trash Mountain as Kris Swanberg Takes Over

Lilly Wachowski’s highly anticipated directorial debut, “Trash Mountain,” will no longer materialize under her guidance as she has stepped down from the project. The film, which features notable stars Zooey Deschanel and Jacki Weaver, has now been taken over by director Kris Swanberg, with production already underway in Chicago.

Details surrounding Wachowski’s exit remain unclear. Her last directorial effort was the ambitious yet polarizing sci-fi film “Jupiter Ascending” in 2015. Since then, Wachowski has made various attempts to adapt several trans-themed novels, including Gretchen Felker-Martin’s “Manhunt” and Jordy Rosenberg’s “Confessions of the Fox,” but none have successfully progressed to production. Another project, an adaptation of the sci-fi lesbian comic “Cosmoknights,” also failed to take off.

The trajectory of Lilly and her sister, Lana Wachowski, in Hollywood has given rise to significant challenges. Over the years, they have encountered hesitation from studios to fund their grand and costly projects, particularly after experiencing substantial losses on titles like “Speed Racer,” “Jupiter Ascending,” and “Cloud Atlas,” which collectively amassed losses of nearly $350 million. This financial strain has evidently contributed to why studios may be cautious about financing future endeavors involving the duo.

Despite the setbacks, Wachowski’s earlier works, particularly the 1996 neo-noir film “Bound,” are celebrated as standout contributions to the independent film scene and remain influential. The Wachowskis’ earlier success with “The Matrix” fundamentally changed the landscape of sci-fi cinema, but they continue to grapple with finding a foothold in today’s industry climate.

The departure of Wachowski from “Trash Mountain” is emblematic of the complexities and volatile nature of filmmaking, but with new leadership in place, there remains hope for the film’s successful realization and for Wachowski to return in a capacity that suits her vision in the future.
