Lil Jon Turns Up the Heat at DNC: A Night of Music and Nomination!

Lil Jon energized the Democratic National Convention with an upbeat performance as he led the roll call for Georgia on Tuesday night. The Atlanta rapper entertained attendees at Chicago’s United Center with his hit “Turn Down for What” while introducing the Georgia delegation on August 20.

This performance was part of a ceremonial roll call, during which states pledged their delegates to support Vice President Kamala Harris for president and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her running mate. Harris had already been designated as the Democratic Party’s presidential nominee in an earlier virtual vote, making this roll call a ceremonial celebration featuring a DJ and various stars announcing their states.

Lil Jon added flair to Georgia’s presentation, energizing the crowd with his presence. “Yeaaaaahhhhhhh!” he exclaimed. “Ladies and gentlemen, we are here tonight to officially nominate Kamala Harris for president! DNC, turn down for what!” He then launched into his well-known song, chanting “We’re not goin’ back!” referring to one of Harris’ campaign messages. In a playful twist, he sang, “VP Harris … gimme the Walz!” echoing his famous line from “Get Low.”

Following Lil Jon’s performance, Georgia Rep. Nikema Williams, chairwoman of the state’s Democratic Party, took the microphone. “In the spirit of good trouble, Georgia casts 123 votes for the next president of the United States, Kamala Harris!” she declared, nodding to the phrase popularized by civil rights icon and late congressman John Lewis.

Other celebrities also participated in the roll call. Actor Sean Astin represented Indiana, Wendell Pierce spoke for Louisiana, Spike Lee supported New York, and Eva Longoria advocated for Texas.

The event was further animated by a DJ playing songs synonymous with each state as they made their presentations. Notable tracks included Bruce Springsteen’s “Born in the U.S.A.” for New Jersey, Eminem’s “Lose Yourself” for Michigan, and the Dropkick Murphys’ “Shipping Up to Boston” for Massachusetts. Wisconsin celebrated with House of Pain’s “Jump Around,” a fan favorite at University of Wisconsin home games.
