“Lights Up on Hope: ‘Polly: The Musical’ Takes Center Stage”

The latest announcement from producer Brian Anthony Moreland reveals exciting plans for “Polly: The Musical,” a new theatrical adaptation drawing inspiration from the beloved 1989 Disney television movie. The original film’s director, Debbie Allen, a two-time Tony Award nominee known for her work in productions like “Sweet Charity” and “Fame,” will once again take the helm to direct and choreograph this Broadway-bound production.

Joining Allen in this creative endeavor are Emmy Award winner Lena Waithe and Michael Benjamin Washington, who will develop the book for the musical. The music and lyrics will be crafted by Grammy Award winner Siedah Garrett, recognized for co-writing the iconic song “Man in the Mirror,” and Joriah Kwamé, known for his work in “Little Miss Perfect.”

Set in Alabama during the 1950s, “Polly” tells the heartwarming story of a spirited orphan named Polly, who faces challenges brought on by segregation yet embodies an unwavering sense of optimism. This resilient character serves as a beacon of hope, navigating the complexities of her environment while promoting a message of positivity and perseverance.

The revival of this story through musical theater not only pays homage to the original film but also aims to resonate with contemporary audiences, making it a timely artistic endeavor. With a talented team behind it, “Polly: The Musical” has the potential to inspire and entertain, reinforcing themes of hope and resilience amidst adversity.
