Five Wildfires Sparked by Lightning Bring Crews to Sacramento County

SACRAMENTO COUNTY, Calif. — Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District crews responded to five wildfires sparked by more than 60 lightning strikes that hit east of Sloughhouse, authorities said.

One of the fires, the Brown Fire on Ione Road near Pony Brown Road, grew to about 60 acres before containment and stopping forward progress. Another fire, the Rock incident, was around 25 acres. The remaining three fires were described as small.

Captain Mark Nunez, spokesman for the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District, noted that the fires were started by more than 60 lightning strikes and that lightning played a role in all of the blazes in the region. Ione Road was blocked between Highway 16 and Meiss Road due to the fire. Nunez said progress for all fires in the region had been halted.

Nunez also reminded residents that, even as weather shifts, humidity remains low, grasses are dry, and dry lightning can ignite fast-spreading fires. With conditions like these, even a small spark can take off quickly.
