Rehoboth Beach is set to welcome some of the East Coast’s finest lifeguards as it hosts the 2025 United States Lifesaving Association (USLA) Mid-Atlantic Regional Championships this month. The event is scheduled for Wednesday, July 9, starting at 8 a.m., and will take place in front of the Rehoboth Beach Patrol’s new headquarters on Baltimore Avenue.
This prestigious championships serves as a qualifying event for the upcoming USLA National Lifesaving Championships in California, which will occur in August. Rehoboth Beach Patrol Captain Jeff Giles expressed his enthusiasm for the event, stating, “We’re excited to have the USLA Mid-Atlantics back on Rehoboth Beach. We welcome everyone to come watch and support our guards.”
Over 300 lifeguards from New York to Virginia will compete in various challenging surf and sand events, showcasing their skills and dedication to lifesaving. The competitions will include a 90-meter sprint, a 2K beach run, a 4×90 soft-sand beach relay, surf swims, and several rescue races that test techniques for swimmer retrieval and the use of paddleboards and landlines. Key events such as the run-swim-run and beach flags will put both speed and tactical skills to the test, representing realistic lifesaving scenarios.
Additionally, local lifeguards will have further opportunities to display their abilities. The 48th annual Rehoboth Beach Patrol Lifeguard Olympics is slated for Thursday, July 24, starting at 4 p.m. Following that, on Monday, July 28, junior lifeguards from Sussex County and Ocean City, Maryland, will compete in their own events, also beginning at 4 p.m. Both occasions will take place at the same beach location.
Founded in 1921, the Rehoboth Beach Patrol has cultivated a reputation as one of the nation’s leading lifesaving agencies, boasting over a century of service and a vast alumni network committed to maintaining its legacy of safety and excellence.
This event not only highlights the dedication of lifeguards but also fosters community spirit and encourages public engagement in beach safety. As the event approaches, anticipation builds for an exciting display of talent and teamwork on Rehoboth Beach.
