The Labasa High Court has sentenced 34-year-old Kositino Latianara to life imprisonment for the murder of 27-year-old taxi driver Amitendra Kumar. The tragic incident occurred at Waisali Hill in Cakaudrove in 2024, highlighting the serious nature of violent crime in the area.

During the court’s proceedings, Justice Lee Burney emphasized the severe circumstances surrounding the case, categorizing it as a high-level murder due to the offender’s intentions and the brutal method employed—Latianara used a knife as his weapon. The court learned that on March 18, 2024, Latianara attacked Kumar, repeatedly stabbing him and ultimately slitting his throat. This violent act reportedly stemmed from a financial dispute, as the victim owed money to the accused.

Post-mortem findings revealed that Kumar succumbed to severe blood loss and internal bleeding as a result of the injuries inflicted during the assault. Following the murder, Kumar’s taxi was discovered abandoned along Waisali Hill, prompting a search that led authorities to find his body further down a hillside.

Justice Burney noted that Latianara has been in remand since his arrest nearly two years ago, a period that will be factored into his sentence. This means he could become eligible for parole after serving 20 years of his life sentence.

This case underscores the continued challenges surrounding crime and safety in the region, while also serving as a poignant reminder of the impacts of violence and the importance of addressing underlying issues that contribute to such tragedies.
