Liberty University has appointed Shawn Quinn as the new defensive coordinator for its football team, according to head coach Jamey Chadwell. Quinn arrives in Lynchburg from Virginia Tech, where he served as the outside linebackers coach in 2025, bringing a wealth of coaching experience to the Flames’ program.

The hiring of Quinn marks the first addition to Chadwell’s coaching staff as he prepares for his fourth season. The Flames have recently seen significant turnover among their coaching ranks, losing three assistant coaches following the 2025 season. This includes Co-Offensive Coordinator and quarterbacks coach Willy Korn, Co-Defensive Coordinator Kyle Krantz, and linebackers coach Josh Linam.

Quinn’s coaching journey began at Virginia Tech, where he joined as the Sam Linebackers and Nickels coach in 2022. Over the next few years, he transitioned to coaching outside linebackers and showcased his ability to develop talent on the field. Before his tenure in Blacksburg, Quinn was the head coach at Savannah State from 2019 to 2021, where he achieved a commendable 16-6 record, successfully guiding the team through a division transition from FCS to Division II. He initially joined Savannah State as the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach in 2018.

His extensive resume also includes stops as a defensive coordinator at Tennessee Tech and Western Carolina, along with assistant coaching roles at several prominent institutions, including LSU and Georgia Southern. Notably, Quinn’s experience and dedication have earned him respect in the coaching community.

“Shawn Quinn brings a defensive mindset built on accountability, preparation, and effort,” commented Bud Foster, the former associate head coach and defensive coordinator at Virginia Tech. He emphasized Quinn’s strong connections with players and his ability to put them in successful positions.

The excitement surrounding Quinn’s hiring was echoed by Brent Pry, the former head coach at Virginia Tech, who also highlighted Quinn’s impressive work ethic and skills in recruiting and defensive strategy. “This is a great opportunity for Shawn and a tremendous hire for Coach Chadwell and the Liberty Football program,” said Pry.

Quinn’s arrival at Liberty is seen as a promising development for the Flames as they look to bolster their defensive strategy and uphold a competitive edge in the upcoming seasons.
