Ipswich Town forward Liam Delap has been granted the opportunity to assess his future options for the upcoming season, according to manager Kieran McKenna. The 22-year-old player, who joined Ipswich from Manchester City for a fee that could reach £20 million last summer, is likely to depart after the club’s relegation back to the Championship following just one year in the Premier League.
There is considerable interest in Delap, with clubs such as Manchester United, Chelsea, and Newcastle reportedly keen to secure his services. His contract includes a £30 million release clause related to the relegation, and Manchester City also retains a buy-back option. McKenna expressed support for Delap’s decision to explore potential moves, acknowledging the importance of this choice for his career. “Liam’s looking at his options for next year, which I think he is entitled to do and we support him with that,” he stated.
Delap stands out with an impressive tally of 12 goals in 36 Premier League appearances, contributing significantly to Ipswich’s efforts despite their swift return to the second tier after just one season. McKenna noted, “We will be proud of the part that we have had in terms of Liam’s development and his contribution this season. If he stays with us, we will be delighted, and if he moves on this summer, it will be a positive sign for the club to have developed and sold a player at that sort of level and hopefully it will be a good move for him as well.”
Furthermore, goalkeeper Massimo Luongo is set to leave Ipswich Town this summer upon the expiration of his contract, while discussions continue regarding contract extensions for defenders Cameron Burgess and Axel Tuanzebe. This strategic planning may help Ipswich build a stronger squad moving forward, emphasizing their commitment to developing talent even in challenging circumstances. Overall, the situation presents a blend of opportunity and optimism for both the players involved and the club’s future.
