Lewandowski’s Return Boosts Barcelona Ahead of Champions League Showdown

Barcelona striker Robert Lewandowski has been cleared to return from a hamstring injury but will start on the bench for the Champions League semi-final second leg against Inter Milan on Tuesday, according to manager Hansi Flick. The 36-year-old Polish forward, who has netted 40 goals for the club this season, has missed the last four matches after suffering the injury during a thrilling 4-3 victory over Celta Vigo on April 19. His absence included missing the Copa del Rey final where Barcelona triumphed over Real Madrid, as well as the first leg of the semi-final against Inter.

Flick expressed optimism regarding Lewandowski’s recovery, stating, “We’ve spoke yesterday and everything is going the right way, and [Lewandowski] is good. Much better than we expected, and he’s ready for the bench. So when we need him, maybe he can come in.” The team’s chances of reaching their first Champions League final in ten years have received a boost with Lewandowski’s presence, especially following a high-scoring 3-3 draw in the first leg.

However, Barcelona will be without key full-backs Jules Koundé and Alejandro Balde due to injury. Flick hinted at potential changes to the defensive lineup, possibly employing centre-backs Ronald Araújo and Eric García, or turning to rising stars Héctor Fort or Gerard Martín.

The absence of Koundé and Balde is expected to challenge Barcelona’s ability to defend against Inter’s counterattacks, particularly from Denzel Dumfries, who was outstanding in the first leg with two goals and an assist. Flick acknowledged the complexities of football, asserting that strategic changes will be necessary to improve defensive performance.

Barcelona is also pursuing a treble this season and remains unbeaten in La Liga since late December, currently leading the league by four points ahead of Real Madrid. After the match against Inter, they will face Real Madrid in a critical La Liga encounter that could have significant title implications.

On the Inter side, manager Simone Inzaghi addressed concerns regarding injured captain Lautaro Martínez, who was substituted due to a muscle injury during the first leg, as well as the uncertain status of defender Benjamin Pavard. Inzaghi stated that the team will evaluate their conditions with the medical staff before making a final decision regarding their participation.

This matchup presents a significant opportunity for both teams as they aim for European glory, highlighting the importance of tactical adjustments and player fitness. The excitement surrounding the game underscores the competitive nature of both clubs as they seek significant triumphs this season.
