Robert Lewandowski scored two crucial goals to lead Barcelona to a 2-1 victory against Valencia in the opening match of the Spanish league on Saturday. This marked the Spanish league debut for coach Hansi Flick, who took over from former player Xavi Hernández at the end of last season.
Valencia struck first with a header from Hugo Duro in the 44th minute, but Lewandowski equalized during first-half stoppage time. He then netted the winner just four minutes into the second half, converting a penalty after Raphinha was fouled in the box. Flick expressed satisfaction with the win, acknowledging some early mistakes but praising the team’s second-half improvement.
Duro’s goal was initially ruled offside but was confirmed after a video review. Lewandowski’s first goal was assisted by Lamine Yamal, who has been in the news following a violent incident involving his father.
Flick also fielded several players from Barcelona’s renowned youth academy, including Gerard Martín and 17-year-old Marc Bernal, both making their first-team debuts. However, defender Alejandro Balde had to leave the match in the second half due to a suspected muscle injury.
Barcelona, which is currently navigating financial difficulties, finished second in the league last season, trailing 10 points behind champions Real Madrid, who kick off their season on Sunday against Mallorca.
In another match, promoted Leganes returned to the first division with a 1-1 draw against Osasuna. Juan Cruz put Leganes ahead in the 22nd minute, but an own goal by Juan Soriano in the 79th minute leveled the score. Leganes had spent the last four seasons in a lower tier before being promoted after winning the second division title. The club is owned by Jeff Luhnow, a former general manager of the Houston Astros, and includes investors from several countries.
