The village of Levuka-i-Daku on Matuku Island is actively addressing the rising concerns surrounding youth involvement in drug-related activities, particularly among those studying in Viti Levu. Village development committee president Taito Coriakula has underscored the commitment to supporting educational initiatives while ensuring village youth remain free from illegal behaviors. He stated that any young person found engaging in drug activities would be brought back to the village, emphasizing the community’s dedication to safety and traditional values.
Coriakula expressed that the community prioritizes the well-being of its youth during weekly meetings. “It’s critical to guarantee they stay on the right side of the law. Our plans are formulated to ensure they are focused on their educational goals. However, those who fail to meet their academic responsibilities may face a return to the village, funded by the committee,” he explained.
With over 200 young members, Levuka-i-Daku houses one of the largest youth populations across the seven islands of Matuku. Coriakula highlighted the significance of a safe environment in nurturing cultural practices and community involvement, as the village’s youth play an essential role in its social fabric.
