Levuka Farmers Complete Climate-Smart Vegetable Training to Revive Local Market

Twenty-five farmers and market vendors in Levuka have recently completed a week-long “Basic Vegetable Production Training,” an initiative designed to revitalize the town’s fresh produce supply and invigorate its local market. Organized by the Ministry of Agriculture and Waterways, the training focused on sustainable farming techniques, soil preparation, vegetable husbandry, and climate-smart practices.

During the closing ceremony, Honourable Inosi Kuridrani, the Assistant Minister for Agriculture and Waterways, highlighted Levuka’s agricultural heritage and emphasized the importance of restoring the area’s productivity. He shared nostalgic memories of the vibrant Levuka market of the 1980s, filled with fresh produce every Saturday, underscoring the need to revive that level of abundance.

“These are tools for change, skills that will help us strengthen food and nutrition security and address non-communicable diseases,” Kuridrani said, reflecting the training’s broader objectives, which extend beyond simply equipping farmers with agricultural skills. The program aims to improve community resilience, nutrition, and livelihoods.

Participants were encouraged to apply the knowledge acquired during the training in their farming practices, share insights with other farmers, and maintain collaboration with Ministry staff for continued development. The Ministry of Agriculture plans to provide ongoing support through further training, technical assistance, and resources, including tools and seedlings.

This initiative aligns with similar programs throughout Fiji aimed at enhancing agricultural productivity and empowering local farmers. Notably, less than a month ago, over 30 farmers from Nawairuku participated in a two-day training program focused on sustainable practices, showcasing a national commitment to uplift farming communities.

Additionally, recent efforts to equip farmers in Levuka with essential farming tools, funded by the UNDP and supported by the Australian government, further reflect the ongoing modernization of agriculture and improvement of market supply. This new equipment is expected to alleviate labor burdens and stabilize vegetable production, addressing local supply challenges more effectively.

As training programs expand across various regions in Fiji, the future of local agriculture looks promising. With continued support and education, farmers are well-positioned to enhance productivity, contribute positively to community development, and promote greater food security and economic resilience.
