LEGO’s Eco-Friendly Evolution: A Playful Shift to Paper Packaging

LEGO is making significant strides towards sustainability by transitioning to paper-based packaging, a process that requires considerable effort and testing. The company highlighted that while the idea of using paper bags for packing LEGO bricks may seem straightforward, the execution is far more intricate.

To find the ideal solution, LEGO evaluated approximately 180 different types and formats of paper. The goal was to create packaging that meets the high expectations of their customers—ensuring the bags are robust enough to survive the manufacturing process and transportation without tearing or compromising the contents.

Another challenge is the material’s responsiveness to humidity; paper is more susceptible to moisture changes than plastic. Therefore, LEGO was diligent in selecting packaging materials suitable for production environments ranging from hot and humid to cold climates.

The company also tested 15 different prototypes with hundreds of children and parents to gather feedback on various shapes, materials, and graphic designs. The shift to paper-based bags not only supports LEGO’s commitment to sustainability but also enhances the unboxing experience, as children reported finding joy in the surprise element of unwrapping paper bags rather than seeing the contents through transparent plastic.

Additionally, LEGO’s new larger paper bags are designed with a stand-up shape, which provides practical storage for loose bricks during the building process, offering convenience for builders.

In summary, LEGO’s careful approach to packaging not only aligns with sustainability goals but also elevates the play experience for its customers. By prioritizing both environmental responsibility and the joy of building, LEGO is paving the way for a future where enjoyment and sustainability go hand in hand. This commitment is both a positive step for the planet and an exciting development for LEGO enthusiasts.
