LEGO’s Bold Move: Can Paper Packaging Transform Playtime?

LEGO is making significant strides in sustainability by shifting towards paper-based packaging. This transition, while seemingly straightforward, has proven to be quite challenging. The company has invested considerable time and resources to identify the perfect paper type that meets its high standards.

LEGO revealed that extensive testing was conducted, examining approximately 180 different paper types and formats to discover suitable packaging that wouldn’t compromise the quality of the product. The new paper bags must endure the intricacies of the manufacturing process without tearing or damaging the contents during transport from the factory to the hands of builders.

A notable challenge with paper is its sensitivity to humidity variation, making it crucial for LEGO to select materials that can perform well in various climates, whether humid or cold. To ensure the functionality and appeal of the new packaging, LEGO tested 15 prototypes with input from hundreds of children and parents, trying different shapes, materials, and designs.

Interestingly, the transition to paper has also added an element of fun to the unboxing experience. Unlike plastic bags, which allow builders to see their contents immediately, the paper bags create an element of suspense that children have found enjoyable. Additionally, the larger paper bags are designed to stand upright, making them convenient for organizing loose bricks during the building process.

This move towards sustainable packaging not only aligns with environmental goals but also enhances the overall user experience for LEGO fans. As LEGO continues to innovate and redefine its packaging, it sets an example for other companies looking to adopt more eco-friendly practices, showcasing how environmental responsibility can also lead to improved product enjoyment.

In summary, LEGO’s commitment to transitioning to paper-based packaging is a multifaceted project that balances sustainability and quality, all while enriching the building experience for its users.
