Legendary Soul Singer Cissy Houston Passes Away at 91

Cissy Houston, the celebrated soul and gospel singer and mother of Whitney Houston, has passed away at the age of 91. Houston died at her home in New Jersey on Monday morning, as confirmed by her daughter-in-law Pat Houston. She had been under hospice care for Alzheimer’s disease and was surrounded by family at the time of her death.

Pat Houston expressed the family’s grief in a statement, saying, “Our hearts are filled with pain and sadness. We lost the matriarch of our family.” She described Cissy as a powerful figure in their lives, a woman of strong faith, and someone deeply committed to family, ministry, and community.

The statement also honored her remarkable seven-decade career in music, stating, “Her contributions to popular music and culture are unparalleled.” The family expressed their gratitude for the years spent with her and the invaluable life lessons she imparted. They hoped for her to rest in peace alongside her daughter Whitney, granddaughter Bobbi Kristina, and other beloved family members.

Cissy Houston began her entertainment career in Newark, New Jersey, as a member of the gospel group Drinkard Four, later forming the Sweet Inspirations. The group provided backup vocals for numerous artists, including Aretha Franklin and Elvis Presley, and were featured in classic tracks such as Van Morrison’s “Brown Eyed Girl” and Jimi Hendrix’s “Burning of the Midnight Lamp.”

Houston released her first solo album, “Presenting Cissy Houston,” in 1970, followed by numerous others, including “Walk on By Faith” in 2012. Throughout her career, she contributed backup vocals on records for many legendary artists, including Bette Midler, Diana Ross, and Beyoncé.

Cissy received her first Grammy Award in 1997 for her album “Face to Face,” and won again in 1999 for “He Leadeth Me.” She was surrounded by a family of entertainers, with her daughter Whitney Houston, nieces Dionne and Dee Dee Warwick, and opera singer cousin Leontyne Price, highlighting the rich musical heritage she was part of.
