Burt, the legendary crocodile renowned for his appearance in the classic film “Crocodile Dundee,” has passed away at the age of at least 90. His death occurred over the weekend as announced by the Crocosaurus Cove reptile aquarium in Darwin, Australia, where he had been a fixture since 2008.

Burt was not just a crocodile; he was a captivating figure, known for his robust personality and fiery demeanor. Crocosaurus Cove shared on social media that he was a “force of nature,” embodying the power and majesty of crocodiles. His independent spirit and status as a confirmed bachelor were part of what made Burt memorable to both the staff and the thousands of visitors who came to see him throughout his life.

This saltwater crocodile measured over 5 meters (16 feet) long and was captured in the Reynolds River during the 1980s, becoming one of the most famous crocodiles worldwide. Burt featured briefly in “Crocodile Dundee,” which starred Paul Hogan as the iconic crocodile hunter Mick Dundee. Although his role in the film was a short one, Burt made a significant impression, even as the film mistakenly depicted an American alligator in a more central scene.

In tribute to Burt, the Crocosaurus Cove plans to install a commemorative sign celebrating his remarkable life and the many stories he shared during his time at the aquarium. This tribute reflects not only a loss but also a recognition of the enduring legacy Burt leaves behind.

Burt’s passing serves as a reminder of the incredible wildlife that inspires awe and captivates the imagination, and his story continues to educate and entertain people about the importance of wildlife conservation. While we mourn his loss, we can also celebrate the insights and joy he brought into many lives.
