Rene Kirby, a remarkable figure known for his boundless spirit and determination, has passed away at the age of 70. Kirby, who lived with spina bifida, was a well-respected member of the Burlington community, celebrated for his adventurous pursuits that included skiing, canoeing, and gymnastics. His brother, Jon Kirby, shared that Rene had been hospitalized for two months due to infections as well as complications related to his esophagus, kidneys, and bladder, and he died at the University of Vermont Medical Center on July 11.
Born with significant physical challenges—more than a foot of his lower spine missing—Rene defied expectations throughout his life. He was known for navigating his three-wheeled bike using a hand crank, and he tagged along with friends on various adventures, showcasing his unique ability to “walk” on his hands.
Rene’s zest for life led him to Hollywood, where he was cast in a film by directors Peter and Bobby Farrelly after impressing them during an accidental encounter in Burlington. He danced with Gwyneth Paltrow in their film and had lines with Jack Black and Jason Alexander, earning recognition for portraying inner beauty and resilience.
In addition to his cinematic endeavors, he was a dedicated athlete who won state gymnastics titles in high school and undertook significant physical challenges, including swimming across Shelburne Bay. Rene worked for many years at IBM and shared his love for carpentry with his brother, with whom he remodeled houses.
Despite facing multiple health battles, including defeating throat cancer, Rene remained an inspiration to those around him. He consistently emphasized that limitations are often self-imposed, famously stating, “You don’t have to stand up to stand out.” His life and legacy will long be remembered, especially by his loving family, including his six siblings and friends who admired his spirit and determination.
Rene Kirby embodies a message of hope and resilience that echoes through his extraordinary life. His story serves as a reminder of the strength of the human spirit, motivating others to rise above their challenges and embrace life fully.
