David X. Sullivan, Thomas J. Finn, and Gregory A. Hall from the law firm McCarter & English have officially joined the legal team representing Sunrun Installation Services in an ongoing civil rights case. This lawsuit was initiated on September 4 in the Connecticut District Court by attorney Robert M. Berke, acting on behalf of George Edward Steins, a former employee of Sunrun.
The lawsuit stems from Steins’ earlier arrest, where he faced charges related to employing an unregistered home improvement salesperson. The crux of the complaint is centered around Sunrun’s alleged failure to notify the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection regarding the termination of Steins’ employment in 2017, which led to him still being associated with Sunrun’s home improvement contractor license. Steins contends that had this information been communicated, he would not have faced the charges, which were ultimately dismissed in May 2024.
This case is currently under the jurisdiction of U.S. District Judge Jeffrey A. Meyer, with the designation 3:24-cv-01423, Steins v. Sunrun, Inc. et al.
This lawsuit highlights the complexities that can arise from employee-employer relationships and the importance of proper communication regarding employment status, especially in licensed professions. It serves as a reminder for companies to ensure they are promptly notifying relevant authorities about employees’ departures to avoid potential legal complications. The outcome of this case will not only impact the parties involved but could also shed light on best practices for employment management within the industry.
It is hopeful that this case will facilitate better communication practices within organizations, ultimately leading to enhanced protections for employees and clearer legal guidelines.
