David X. Sullivan, Thomas J. Finn, and Gregory A. Hall of McCarter & English have stepped in to represent Sunrun Installation Services in a civil rights lawsuit that is currently underway. This legal action was initiated on September 4 in the Connecticut District Court, where attorney Robert M. Berke filed the complaint on behalf of former employee George Edward Steins.

The lawsuit stems from Steins’ arrest and subsequent charges for employing an unregistered home improvement salesperson. He claims that had Sunrun communicated to the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection that his employment had ended back in 2017—and that he no longer possessed a valid home improvement contractor license—he would not have faced those charges, which were ultimately dismissed in May 2024.

This case has been assigned to U.S. District Judge Jeffrey A. Meyer and is listed under the case number 3:24-cv-01423, titled Steins v. Sunrun, Inc. et al.

This situation highlights the complexities surrounding employment and licensing regulations in the home improvement sector, as well as the responsibilities companies have towards their former employees. It serves as a reminder of the importance of accurate record-keeping and communication within organizations.

In the broader view, it is encouraging to note that the legal system provides avenues for redress, allowing individuals to challenge circumstances they believe to be unjust. As the case progresses, it will be interesting to see how it unfolds and the implications it may have for employment practices in the industry.
