Acting Prime Minister Filimoni Vosarogo has clarified the nature of his request to the Solicitor-General, emphasizing that it was solely for a legal opinion rather than a review of the files associated with the Commission of Inquiry managed by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP). This clarification comes in light of criticism from the Leader of Opposition, Inia Seruiratu, who condemned the request as potentially undermining natural justice and the rule of law.

Seruiratu expressed concerns that the Solicitor-General’s involvement in a legal review could signify political pressure on the ODPP, which he believes could threaten the constitutional independence of the office. He cautioned against any actions that could be perceived as interference with prosecutorial duties.

In response, Vosarogo stated that Seruiratu misinterpreted his original statement, labeling the Opposition Leader’s accusation of political interference as “false and reckless.” The Acting Prime Minister explained that he was seeking legal advice on how ODPP decisions might impact ongoing court cases related to issues stemming from the Commission of Inquiry.

Vosarogo further mentioned that the legal opinion was necessary for briefing Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka upon his return earlier this week, as part of routine official transitions. He reaffirmed that the Solicitor-General does not possess the authority to review ODPP files, and that any decisions by the ODPP cannot be administratively reviewed outside of the judicial system. Throughout this matter, Vosarogo has maintained that his request was fully compliant with legal standards and did not constitute any attempt to compromise the independence of the prosecution process.

This exchange reflects the complexities of governance and the importance of upholding judicial independence. The ongoing dialogue between government leaders and the opposition highlights the critical nature of transparency and legal integrity within the political framework.
