Legacy of a Champion: Remembering Bill Pascrell’s Impact on New Jersey and Beyond

Democratic Representative Bill Pascrell, who had a long and impactful career in New Jersey politics that lasted four decades and became well-known for his pointed criticisms of Donald Trump in recent years, passed away on Wednesday at the age of 87. His family announced his death through a statement on his official X account.

The family expressed their deep sorrow, stating, “It is with deep sadness that we announce that Bill Pascrell Jr., our beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away this morning. As our United States Representative, Bill fought to his last breath to return to the job he cherished and to the people he loved. He lived his entire life in Paterson and had an unwavering love for the city he grew up in and served. He is now at peace after a lifetime devoted to our great nation America.”

Pascrell’s death coincides with the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, where Vice President Kamala Harris is set to accept her party’s nomination. Notable figures paying tribute to Pascrell from the convention stage include New Jersey Senator Cory Booker, Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, and Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi.

Pelosi praised Pascrell’s dedication to America’s working families, saying, “In the Congress, Congressman Pascrell has been a relentless champion of America’s working families — fighting for workers’ rights and investments in the education of our children.” She also noted his pride in representing Paterson, which he highlighted as the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution.

New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy remembered Pascrell as a key advocate for families in Congress over the past 27 years. Speaker Mike Johnson remarked on Pascrell’s service, recalling his honorable tenure in the United States Army and commitment to his community.

The 14-term congressman had recently been hospitalized for a respiratory illness but was readmitted to a medical center shortly after being discharged to a rehabilitation facility. He was the second-oldest member of the House, following retiring Rep. Grace Napolitano.

Earlier this year, Pascrell was one of two New Jersey congressmen to pass away, following the death of Democratic Rep. Donald Payne Jr. in April. Pascrell was seeking re-election for his 9th District seat this November, and due to the timing of his passing, Democratic county committee members are set to choose a new nominee.

Born on January 25, 1937, in Paterson, New Jersey, Pascrell was the grandson of Italian immigrants. He served in the Army and the Army Reserve, obtaining an honorable discharge in 1967. After earning degrees from Fordham University, he began his political career through local school boards and later served in the New Jersey General Assembly and as mayor of Paterson before being elected to Congress in 1996.

During his time in Washington, Pascrell was involved in various committees, including the House Transportation and Infrastructure, Budget, and Ways and Means committees. He passionately advocated for tax deductions beneficial to his constituents, offshore wind energy, and increased awareness of traumatic brain injuries among veterans.

Pascrell was also known for his outspoken critiques of Trump, often using Twitter as a platform for his views. His recent posts included pointed remarks about Trump’s criminal convictions and warnings about potential future threats to democracy.

Pascrell is survived by his wife, Elsie Marie Botto, their three children, and five grandchildren.
