LeBron James Nears Return for Lakers, Could Break 23-Season NBA Milestone

LeBron James is inching closer to his return to the court after missing the first 11 games of the Los Angeles Lakers’ NBA season due to a sciatica issue. Currently, James is practicing with the South Bay Lakers, the franchise’s G League affiliate, as the Lakers embark on a five-game road trip. Coach JJ Redick confirmed on November 11 that while James will be training with South Bay, he is not expected to participate in any G League games.

The 40-year-old superstar has been ramping up his training, engaging in full five-on-five drills during practices. After being cleared for on-court activities as of November 6, the Lakers have opted not to set a definitive timetable for his return, providing periodic updates instead.

Although Redick hinted that James is unlikely to make his comeback during the current road trip, which concludes on November 15 against the Milwaukee Bucks, there is optimism that he may debut on November 18 when the Lakers host the Utah Jazz. If this occurs, James will set an NBA record by becoming the first player in league history to play 23 seasons, surpassing the previous record he shares with Hall of Famer Vince Carter.

As a 21-time All-Star and four-time Most Valuable Player, James has remained a top performer, averaging 24.4 points, 8.2 assists, and 7.8 rebounds last season. His return is expected to significantly bolster the Lakers’ frontcourt and add another elite ball handler to the roster.

The Lakers have started the season strong with an 8-3 record, buoyed by impressive contributions from players like Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves, along with key role players such as Rui Hachimura and Jake LaRavia. With James back in action, the team aims to enhance its competitive edge as the season progresses.
