The Lealman Exchange, situated at 5175 45th St. N., will host a new farmers market beginning in October.
The Lealman Farmers Market will take place on the fourth Sunday of each month from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., offering residents easy access to a variety of fresh, locally sourced products including fruits, vegetables, herbs, and honey. More than a dozen vendors have already committed to participate, with space available for a total of 35 vendors.
This initiative aims to improve the availability of fresh food options in the community and foster better connections between residents and Florida farmers.
Lealman has encountered difficulties, similar to other urban areas, in ensuring residents have easy access to healthy food options. Local officials have dedicated time and resources to enhance the community, which has been classified as a food desert due to the absence of a grocery store. The establishment of the farmers market is viewed as a strategic response to this problem, facilitating direct access for residents to local farmers and food producers.
“Establishing a market that provides fresh produce and healthy food choices in Lealman is crucial for enhancing the well-being of its residents,” stated Tom Almonte, Assistant County Administrator for Pinellas County. “This initiative guarantees that all residents, regardless of their income level, can make healthier food decisions, ultimately contributing to a stronger and more resilient community.”
Choosing the Lealman Exchange as the location for the farmers market is particularly meaningful. The community center, which operates through a public/private partnership between Pinellas County and the St. Petersburg Foundation, currently functions as a hub for various community services and events.
“Besides improving food access, we aim for the Lealman Farmers Market to be a place for community gathering,” said Joe Hamilton, cofounder of the St. Petersburg Foundation. “When people come together in a positive space, they cultivate relationships that contribute to a more interconnected and resilient community, enhancing everyone’s quality of life.”
The market organizers are still on the lookout for local farmers, artisans, and food producers. Additional information regarding the Lealman Farmers Market, including scheduled dates and a vendor registration form, is available online.
