The 509th Bomb Wing recently conducted a Change of Command Ceremony honoring Colonel Keith Butler, who is retiring after an impressive 34 years of dedicated service in the Air Force. The ceremony took place at 9 a.m. on June 18, with Major General Jason Armagost presiding over the event.

Colonel Butler, who has commanded the 509th Bomb Wing since 2023, officially handed over his command to Colonel Joshua Wiitala. During his farewell address, Butler encouraged the unit to stay vigilant and ready for any future missions, emphasizing the importance of their roles in national defense.

Colonel Wiitala, who brings 22 years of Air Force experience to his new position, previously served as the deputy commander of the 28th Bomb Wing at Ellsworth Air Force Base in South Dakota. In his first speech as commander, Wiitala expressed optimism for the future of the unit, underlining the critical responsibilities they hold as the nation’s sole B-2 Spirit stealth bomber unit.

This Change of Command Ceremony reflects a long-standing military tradition that symbolizes the formal transfer of authority and responsibilities between commanding officers, signifying a new chapter for the 509th Bomb Wing and underscoring their post in maintaining national security.

The transition from Colonel Butler to Colonel Wiitala signals not only a continuation of service but also a renewed commitment to the mission and values of the Air Force, inspiring hope for the future of the unit.
