Leadership Crisis at San Diego Pride: Community Calls for Change

Concerns are mounting regarding the leadership of San Diego Pride as a group of 30 former staff members and board members have expressed their discontent in a critical letter to the board. The group, which includes individuals with over 250 years of collective service to the organization, is concerned about high turnover rates and a perceived lack of direction, indicating that the current leadership is failing to promote year-round advocacy and community engagement.

Key contributor Bob Leyh highlighted the importance of not coming across as combative while voicing their concerns, amidst rumors that the board may shift the organization’s focus back to just hosting a parade and festival rather than providing continuous programs year-round. As discontent within the community grows, several organizations, including UCSD and Mayor Todd Gloria, have already decided to withdraw their participation in upcoming events, largely due to the controversial stance of musical headliner Kehlani regarding the ongoing conflict in Israel and Gaza.

Rabbi Devorah Marcus shared her concern over Kehlani’s comments, stating that they found issue with Kehlani’s call for violent action instead of the individual’s critique of Israel’s policies. In response to the backlash, Kehlani released a video asserting her stance against genocide and violence, insisting she is not anti-Semitic but rather against the actions of the Israeli government.

In response to the community’s concerns, the San Diego Pride board acknowledged the criticisms in a statement, emphasizing their commitment to transparency and the urgency of preserving the organization’s mission. They plan to address the matters in an upcoming board meeting, reflecting a recognition of the letter’s call for greater accountability and governance reform.

The letter outlines several recommendations for restoring trust and stability within San Diego Pride, urging for clear communication of core values, community engagement in leadership selection, and transparent operational practices. The signatories are hopeful that with the right actions, San Diego Pride can return to its roots as a vibrant force for LGBTQ+ advocacy and inclusion.

The situation poses a challenge but also an opportunity for San Diego Pride to reevaluate and strengthen its mission. The community continues to watch closely, advocating for a positive change that could foster a renewed commitment to justice, inclusion, and the legacy of Pride.
