American Samoa is set to enhance its global connectivity through a new undersea cable initiative. Governor Pulaalii Nikolao Pula announced this week that the territory will participate in the Pacific Connect initiative, a strategic collaboration with tech giant Google.

The initiative aims to bolster American Samoa’s digital infrastructure, resilience, and connection to the global economy. Central to this effort is the Le Vasa cable, which is an independent next-generation subsea fiber-optic system. This system will interlink with the Bulikula cable, facilitating connections to other regions such as Fiji and French Polynesia.

The incorporation of the Le Vasa cable is particularly noteworthy, as it allows American Samoa to leverage ongoing construction in the area related to the Bulikula cable, leading to reduced costs and faster installation times. The name “Le Vasa,” meaning “Ocean” or “Vast Sea,” holds deep cultural resonance for the American Samoan people, symbolizing both historical trade routes and modern connectivity that brings with it information, innovation, and new opportunities.

Once operational, the Le Vasa cable is expected to provide secure, high-speed internet access, enhancing network resiliency, especially during natural disasters and emergencies. Governor Pula stressed the significance of this project, describing it as a historic step toward a more connected future for American Samoa.

“Our Administration is committed to economic advancement, and this project strengthens our strategic role in the Pacific while ensuring future generations benefit from the Le Vasa cable project,” he stated. This initiative promises to not only improve digital access but also foster economic growth and development in the territory.
