LDS Church Appoints New Leaders for Mexico and Southwest United States Areas

The First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has made significant changes to the leadership of both the Mexico and United States Southwest Areas following the recent appointment of a new Presiding Bishopric. These adjustments are effective immediately and reflect the ongoing efforts to strengthen church governance and outreach.

Bishop Sean Douglas has been released from his role as President of the Mexico Area, and Elder José L. Alonso has concluded his tenure as President of the United States Southwest Area. Additionally, Elder Michael A. Dunn is no longer serving as an Assistant Executive Director of the Church Communication Department and has stepped down from the Church Communication and International Coordinating Committees.

In a noteworthy development, Elder Moisés Villanueva has been appointed as the new President of the Mexico Area, with Elder José L. Alonso and Brik V. Eyre taking on the roles of First and Second Counselors, respectively. This new leadership team is expected to enhance the church’s presence and support within Mexico.

Simultaneously, Elder Michael A. Dunn has been named the new President of the United States Southwest Area, with Elders Jonathan S. Schmitt and Steven C. Barlow serving as his First and Second Counselors. Together, they are poised to guide and strengthen the church’s mission in the southwestern United States.

The Area Presidencies, composed of General Authority Seventies or Area Seventies, play a crucial role in supporting church members, missionaries, and local leaders under the direction of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. This new leadership structure aims to ensure that the spiritual needs of congregants are met effectively and that the church continues to thrive in its mission. The transitions signify a commitment to fostering leadership that aligns with the church’s objectives and enhances community engagement.
