Recent developments regarding the fire at Vunato Landfill in Lautoka have raised concerns about its possible causes. Taitusi Rasoki, the chair of the Lautoka Board of Special Administrators, stated that the blaze, which occurred during the recent weekend, may have been initiated by scrap metal collectors who frequent the site. He indicated that this is not an uncommon issue, particularly as such fires appear to increase in frequency as the festive season approaches.
Mr. Rasoki explained that it is rumored among the public that individuals selling scrap metal might intentionally set fires to clear debris, making it easier to collect valuable materials to sell. While he could not definitively claim this was the cause of the most recent incident, he did acknowledge that the fire appeared deliberate. In light of these events, the council has sought assistance from the police to address the issue.
Addressing the broader context, the Vunato landfill has historically struggled with fire incidents, and the council is keen to explore improved fire management strategies due to the vast area covered by the landfill. Current efforts to manage waste and mitigate environmental impacts also include a feasibility study for a new landfill site, similar to the successful Naboro Landfill, which aims to alleviate some of the burdens that the Vunato site faces.
The Vunato dump currently handles around 75.5 tonnes of waste each day, contributing to an annual total nearing 40,330 tonnes. As highlighted by Minister Maciu Nalumisa, addressing this growing waste challenge is critical for health and environmental sustainability. Plans are in motion to rehabilitate other problematic dump sites in the region, further illustrating the government’s commitment to finding sustainable waste disposal solutions.
