In an impactful move towards sustainability, over 22,000 plastic bottles and aluminum cans have been successfully collected in Lautoka as part of the government’s return-and-earn initiative. The local council has distributed approximately $1,200 to residents who participated in this environmentally friendly program. Minister for Local Government Maciu Nalumisa praised the initiative for its role in reducing illegal dumping and assisting councils in managing Fiji’s growing waste challenges more effectively.
During a recent speech in Lautoka, Nalumisa encouraged community members to recycle by returning empty bottles and cans to municipal councils. He highlighted the incentive, stating, “What we have done is to encourage the people at our municipalities to assist the council by returning aluminum cans and any empty bottles that you have at home. If you return those cans and bottles, the council will pay you five cents.”
This return-and-earn initiative has been extended across various councils nationwide, aimed at changing public behavior towards responsible waste disposal. Nalumisa urged residents to proactively collect recyclables at home, in schools, and within their communities, steering them away from illegal dumping and reliance on landfills.
To further combat illegal dumping, the Lautoka City Council is set to install five portable, solar-powered CCTV cameras at identified littering hotspots. Nalumisa also encouraged the public to report instances of illegal dumping, emphasizing the need for community accountability.
The Minister concluded by underscoring the importance of effective waste management starting at home and reiterated that every individual has a role in maintaining a clean Fiji. This initiative not only promotes recycling but also fosters community engagement in environmental stewardship, reflecting a unified commitment towards a sustainable future. The collaborative effort of residents in embracing responsible disposal practices sets a hopeful precedent for tackling Fiji’s environmental challenges.
