Residents of Lautoka living near the Waiyavi waterfall have been urged to take a stand against littering in their community. The area has been increasingly jeopardized as it transforms into a dumping site for both individuals and businesses, evident from the health risks it poses to swimmers.
Shalend Singh, the head of services for the Lautoka City Council, indicated that the situation is of significant concern. He revealed that a truck was intercepted last week while illegally disposing of waste at the waterfall. Singh acknowledged the difficulties of addressing this issue, noting that offenders often choose odd hours to commit such acts.
In response to this pressing environmental problem, the council has encouraged local residents to actively report any instances of littering they observe. This initiative aims to curb the illegal dumping and preserve the natural beauty of the Waiyavi waterfall, ensuring it remains a safe recreational spot for the community.
