The Lautoka City Council has acknowledged the ongoing challenges posed by fires at the Vunato trash site, which have been exacerbated by unauthorized waste picking and difficult environmental conditions. Council chair, Taitusi Rasoki, indicated that preventative measures are being formulated in collaboration with stakeholders, aiming to ensure greater safety and efficiency at the landfill.
Rasoki highlighted plans to impose restrictions on who can access the dump, stating that only authorized personnel and legitimate dump users will be allowed entry. Any unauthorized entrants will face legal action. This move aims to reduce interference in operations that have previously led to increased fire risks, especially as recent investigations pointed to individuals attempting to illegally salvage scrap metal as a major cause of past incidents.
In light of the recent fires, which have prompted health concerns among nearby residents, the council is actively working on strategies to manage these blazes effectively. Rasoki detailed that the council has employed two water trucks and several pumps to draw water from canals, in addition to deploying a significant number of staff to contain smokes and manage fires, despite the ongoing costs and resource strain on the council.
The issues at the Vunato landfill are compounded by dry and windy weather conditions that enhance fire susceptibility, along with the limitations presented by low tides that restrict the use of seawater for firefighting efforts.
