The long-anticipated Lautoka Swimming Pool project is approaching completion, as tender submissions for the final phase of construction have recently closed. Housing and Local Government Minister Maciu Nalumisa made this announcement during the inauguration of the newly refurbished Lautoka bus terminal.

Minister Nalumisa shared that the tender for the swimming pool, which closed on January 13, signifies a crucial step towards the pool’s operational launch by the end of this year. This announcement aligns with various other significant updates concerning municipal projects, including the opening of the new bus terminal and enhancements to local market facilities.

Acknowledging the delays that have beset the project, Mr. Nalumisa expressed appreciation for the patience shown by Lautoka residents. Initially initiated in 2017 with aims of establishing an Olympic-standard pool, the project encountered major setbacks in 2019, largely because of mismanagement and issues stemming from earlier contracts. Consequently, the estimated cost of the pool escalated from $2 million to approximately $12.6 million, leading to public concern and scrutiny.

In addressing these hurdles, the project has undergone a re-scoping process, engaging new contractors to drive the project towards successful completion. The renewed focus on the Lautoka Swimming Pool underscores the city’s dedication to enhancing recreational facilities for its residents, fostering improved health and well-being through sports and physical activity. This initiative offers a hopeful outlook for the community as they look forward to better access to recreational options in the near future.
