Lautoka Sugar Mill Fire: Cigarette Theory Sparks Arson Probe

Lautoka Sugar Mill Fire Sparks Arson Probe as Investigators Examine All Angles

An investigation into the fire that engulfed the Lautoka Sugar Mill last weekend suggests the blaze might have started with a discarded cigarette. However, officials are keeping open the possibility of arson. Ana Naisoro, a police spokesperson, confirmed that arson is being actively investigated.

The fire erupted from a rubbish dump located around 40 meters from the mill. Initial findings from the Fiji Sugar Corporation indicate a cigarette could have ignited the fire. Despite these early indications, the Lautoka police continue to probe all potential causes.

This recent incident brings to mind a similar event earlier this year when a fire at Suva’s Defence Club was determined to be arson after an extensive investigation. National Fire Authority CEO Puamau Sowane confirmed that this fire was deliberately set, and the case was handed to the Fiji Police Crime Office for further scrutiny. If arson is established in the Lautoka fire, similar procedures are likely to be followed.

While the initial suspicion is that a cigarette caused the fire, the dedication of authorities to explore all angles reveals their commitment to uncovering the truth. Law enforcement is meticulously investigating to determine the fire’s exact cause and to take measures to prevent future occurrences. Such diligent efforts by officials aim not only to achieve justice but also to reassure the public of their safety and uphold rigorous accountability practices.
