Lautoka Showdown: Fiji Junior Bati Aim to Defend Petero Civoniceva Shield in Rematch

The Fiji National Rugby League Junior Bati team is poised to defend the prestigious Petero Civoniceva Shield as they square off against Australia’s Caloundra State High School tomorrow in Lautoka. This highly anticipated rematch follows the Junior Bati’s victory over Caloundra State High in 2023, setting the stage for an exciting contest.

Coach Peni Baro expressed a strong sense of confidence regarding the team’s preparations, highlighting the diverse backgrounds of the players who have come together from various parts of Fiji. “The teams’ preparations have been good. Most of these boys came from all over Fiji,” Baro remarked. He noted that the lineup retained many players from their recent 28-12 win against Tonga, emphasizing a solid foundation built through consistent training.

Players from schools such as Lelean Memorial School, Marist Brothers High School, and Nasinu contribute to a talent-rich roster, with several being school dropouts who have embraced the opportunity to compete in rugby league. Baro credited the team’s ongoing development to the guidance of Fiji Bati head coach Wise Kativerata and coach Asaeli Saravaki, who have been instrumental in honing the players’ skills for this competition.

Recognizing the challenge posed by Caloundra State High School, Baro anticipates a closely contested match as both teams vie for victory. “Our opponent Caloundra State High School is a tough opponent. This is more likely a rematch, considering they competed against us two years ago and will be eager to turn the tide,” he noted.

Baro extended his gratitude to supporters and called on the community to rally behind the Junior Bati as they aim to retain their title. The match is scheduled to kick off at 10 AM in Churchill Park, and excitement abounds as fans look forward to an engaging display of talent and sportsmanship from both teams.

This event not only highlights the competitive spirit of junior rugby league but also reflects the commitment within Fijian rugby to cultivate young talent, suggesting a promising future for the sport in the nation.
