Lautoka Seeks Public Input on Coronation Park Plans

The Minister for Local Government, Maciu Nalumisa, announced that further public consultations regarding a proposed project at Coronation Park in Lautoka will be held in the near future. His statement came after attending a session in Lautoka where he reaffirmed the Government’s dedication to transparency and active community involvement in all Public-Private Partnership (PPP) initiatives.

During the meeting yesterday afternoon, Mr. Nalumisa underscored the crucial role of public consultations, especially for large-scale developments that can significantly affect social, economic, and environmental conditions. He noted that these forums not only promote transparency but also eliminate doubts about corruption or favoritism, holding both public and private entities accountable to taxpayers.

The Minister emphasized that engaging local residents, businesses, community organizations, and environmental advocates is essential for refining project plans. Such engagement ensures that developments remain financially viable, socially responsible, and environmentally sustainable. He highlighted the ongoing reminder to municipal councils about the importance of these consultations before proceeding with substantial projects.

Around 100 ratepayers participated in the two consultation sessions held yesterday, reflecting community interest and investment in the future of their public spaces. This public response aligns with broader concerns regarding urban development in Lautoka, particularly regarding the preservation of green spaces like Coronation Park, which has historically served as a vital recreational area for the community.

This proactive move towards inclusive decision-making underscores the commitment from local authorities to balance urban development with the preservation of community values. As the consultations progress, the cooperation between residents and government officials showcases a promising approach to sustainable development that respects community needs and desires. Ultimately, fostering such dialogue could pave the way for enhanced urban environments that benefit both the economy and local wellbeing.
