Residents of Vaivai, Saru in Lautoka, demonstrated remarkable community spirit by swiftly addressing the obstruction caused by a large rain tree that blocked access to their bridge following heavy rainfall on Tuesday. The tree, which had been washed downstream during a significant flood last year, remained lodged near a local sugarcane field.
Local resident Jay Chand, a lifelong inhabitant of the area, noted that the community took immediate action on Monday night. They gathered to remove branches from the fallen tree to restore access, showcasing their commitment to overcoming the challenges posed by severe weather. By the following day, contractors from Flametree arrived to assist in the complete removal of the obstruction.
Mr. Chand commended the proactive response from the advisory councillor, emphasizing the vital role of local leadership during emergencies. The bridge serves as the sole access point for approximately 300 residents, making its clearance essential for daily transportation needs.
Highlighting ongoing issues, Mr. Chand expressed concern about upstream residents who neglect their responsibilities by cutting trees and leaving debris unattended. This oversight has led to recurring blockages, which are detrimental during heavy rainfall. Additionally, he pointed out that poor road conditions not only hinder access but also disrupt the community’s livelihood, particularly affecting the timely delivery of sugarcane.
Despite these obstacles, the community’s collaboration with Flametree personnel demonstrated a collective resilience and determination to tackle local environmental challenges.
