Residents of Kaunitoni Street in Waiyavi Stage 2, Lautoka, are voicing serious concerns about the slow response times from police, which they believe have worsened crime and heightened feelings of insecurity in the community. Justice of Peace Amit Raj shed light on ongoing problems in the area, including drug abuse, underage alcohol sales, and a rise in violent incidents that have recently escalated.
Raj recounted troubling events such as youths throwing firecrackers at homes, vehicles, and individuals. He shared a distressing personal experience where his temple and residence were targeted during Navratri prayers, and the police took three hours to arrive, giving the culprits ample time to escape.
Residents described their weekends as chaotic, characterized by excessive drinking, loud swearing, and harassment that persist into the early hours. They revealed a shocking account of a recent assault where a man was robbed and left injured in a drain, suffering a broken arm.
Raj expressed that this continued decline in safety threatens to erode residents’ trust in law enforcement, especially with Diwali approaching. He has made a direct appeal to the Commissioner of Police for increased patrols, stronger charges against offenders, and an overall commitment to restoring security in the area. “We cannot walk freely, enjoy our homes, or even shop without the fear of being robbed or assaulted,” Raj lamented.
These issues resonate with similar frustrations reported by other communities in Fiji, where rising crime rates have prompted calls for a greater police presence. Residents in Korovuto and Tamavua have also expressed dissatisfaction with crime levels and inadequate police response. Acknowledging these concerns, local authorities, including Acting Police Commissioner Juki Fong Chew, have suggested the development of active Crime Prevention Committees to strengthen collaboration between the police and communities.
The ongoing demand for improved safety measures highlights a wider trend in Fiji, as various neighborhoods push for proactive law enforcement responses and increased community engagement. There is hope that with active participation and collective pressure from residents, neighborhoods throughout the country can restore their safety and peace of mind.
