The Lautoka Residents and Ratepayers Association is expressing optimism regarding the Lautoka City Council’s responsiveness to community concerns about a proposed $5 million development project near Coronation Park. Association president Narayan Reddy emphasized that although the council has assured residents that construction will not encroach upon parkland, there are still apprehensions surrounding the chosen development site.
Reddy noted that the area typically suffers from a lack of public engagement, as it features benches that remain largely unused and is prone to flooding during heavy rains. He pointed out that the site’s characteristics make it less suitable for development, stating, “It’s like a basin, so every time there is heavy rain, water collects there.”
Reddy expressed gratitude towards Taitusi Rasoki, the chairman of the council’s special administrator, for reassuring residents that no approvals for the development have yet been granted. He highlighted the importance of recent consultations, where community members had opportunities to voice their concerns, saying, “We thank Mr. Rasoki and the council for their informative consultations.”
The primary focus of the association is to advocate for relocating the proposed development to a more fitting area, ensuring that community voices are represented in the decision-making process. Public submissions related to the project are set to close on November 6, fostering a positive environment for ongoing discussions and community engagement.
This situation mirrors a broader trend in Lautoka, where residents are increasingly vocal about their desire to protect green spaces amid the pressures of development. Similar discussions surrounding other development proposals underscore a community committed to preserving recreational areas while balancing urban expansion with environmental considerations. As these crucial conversations unfold, the collaborative efforts between local authorities and residents signify a promising path toward sustainable development that aligns with the aspirations of the community.
