Lautoka City Council has taken a major step towards enhancing sustainability and climate resilience by releasing its first-ever Voluntary Local Review (VLR) Report. This advancement makes Lautoka the second city in Fiji and the Pacific region to undertake such an initiative, following in the footsteps of Suva. The VLR Report is pivotal for local governance as it aligns municipal development efforts with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
According to Shalend Singh, the Head of Service for Lautoka City Council, the VLR Report functions as a strategic blueprint aimed at nurturing inclusive, resilient, and sustainable urban communities in Lautoka. The report outlines the city’s achievements in advancing nine out of the 17 SDGs, focusing on essential areas such as health and well-being, clean water, gender equality, climate action, and sustainable urban development.
Singh noted that the creation of the VLR Report was a year-long collaborative effort involving key stakeholders such as the Water Authority of Fiji, the Ministry of Health, Fiji Police, and the Chamber of Commerce. This collective approach underscores the understanding that fostering a sustainable city requires partnerships across various sectors, reinforcing the importance of collaboration in achieving urban sustainability goals.
Beyond the VLR Report, Lautoka’s commitment to sustainability is further exemplified through initiatives like the clean schools program, which has engaged 28 schools, and community efforts to promote composting. The city council proudly reported that it has successfully composted 100% of its market waste, showcasing its dedication to minimizing environmental impact.
Lautoka’s partnerships with international organizations, including JICA, UNDP, ADB, and USAID, are integral to its overarching strategy for enhancing waste management and encouraging sustainable practices among residents. These collaborative initiatives demonstrate a growing awareness of the significance of environmental sustainability and community health.
The proactive steps taken by Lautoka City Council instill a sense of hope for a sustainable future, fostering a culture of responsibility and collaboration among citizens.
