Lautoka City Council has taken firm action against littering, issuing warnings and penalties to those responsible for illegal dumping along Queen’s Road in Wairabetia. Shalend Singh, the Head of Service, reported that after previous enforcement activities by Litter Prevention Officers on Savu Street, the Council launched an extensive investigation. This effort led to identifying an offender connected to multiple sites with dumped waste.

The individual received three litter infringement notices under the Litter Act 2008 and was required to promptly remove the discarded materials. A follow-up inspection on Sunday confirmed that all three locations had been thoroughly cleared, aided by the deployment of an excavator and truck.

Concurrently, Council officers held awareness sessions for vendors at Saweni Top, where one person was fined for littering. The Council’s rural garbage contractor was also called upon to clean up additional litter found opposite the Superfoods supermarket.

Singh reiterated the Council’s dedication to tracking down and penalizing litter offenders, asserting that strict measures will be enforced to uphold the law and ensure responsibility. He encouraged residents to work together with the Council to maintain a clean, safe, and appealing Lautoka City, promoting a community spirit in the collective fight against littering. This proactive approach not only addresses the immediate issue of waste but also seeks to instill long-term behavioral change for a cleaner environment.
