Lautoka Hospital Expands Cardiac Care with New Cath Lab in Fiji

Lautoka Hospital Marks Cardiac Milestone as New Cath Lab Debuts

Lautoka Hospital has marked a significant achievement in cardiac care by successfully performing 285 open-heart surgeries since the introduction of the service in October 2022. This update was announced by Health Minister Dr. Atonio Lalabalavu during a Parliamentary session, where he addressed questions from Opposition MP Parveen Bala regarding the hospital’s cardiac capabilities.

In addition to the open-heart surgeries, Dr. Lalabalavu outlined the establishment of new Cath Lab services launched on May 21, 2025, which have conducted 322 angiograms by September 26, 2025. These cardiothoracic services are made possible through a Concession Agreement with Health Care Fiji Pte Ltd, which works with MIOT Investment (Fiji) Pte Ltd and its parent company, MIOT Hospitals Pvt. Ltd. based in India.

The enhancements at Lautoka Hospital reflect the Fijian government’s commitment to improving healthcare delivery throughout the Western Division. The newly inaugurated Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory is part of an $11 million investment aimed at modernizing the hospital’s infrastructure, which also includes the introduction of advanced medical equipment such as Fiji’s first public MRI Suite. This progressive development aims to make essential cardiac care more accessible to patients within the local community.

Recognizing the importance of these advancements, Deputy Prime Minister Professor Biman Prasad noted that they significantly reduce the need for long-distance travel for critical medical procedures. This not only facilitates timely interventions that can potentially save lives but also enhances local healthcare standards and positions Fiji as an upcoming hub for medical tourism, attracting individuals seeking quality healthcare in the stunning Pacific Islands.

Community support and collaboration will play a crucial role as these initiatives progress, fostering a collective focus on elevating medical services and reinforcing Fiji’s healthcare framework for future generations. The strides made so far inspire optimism for a healthier Fiji, where cutting-edge medical treatments are increasingly available to all.
