The National Fire Authority (NFA) has issued an urgent warning to citizens, emphasizing the importance of fire safety and vigilance in the wake of a significant fire incident in Waiyavi Stage 1, Lautoka, on October 29, 2025. NFA Chief Executive Officer Puamau Sowane stressed the ongoing danger of residential fires and the need for greater community awareness.
Firefighters received an emergency call about the blaze at 11:02 a.m. and arrived within four minutes to find a duplex house fully engulfed in flames. Initial investigations revealed that the fire originated in a flat occupied by an adult and two children. Prompt action by a Year 3 student, who alerted the adult about the smoke and flames, likely averted further tragedy. The other flat housed a couple and two children, all of whom were fortunately safe.
The damaged flat, which measured 168 square meters and was constructed from a combination of concrete and wood, suffered an estimated 80% structural loss, amounting to $120,000. The adjoining unit, home to ten occupants, also experienced partial damage due to the fire.
Sowane reinforced the message that diligent housekeeping and fire safety measures are essential to avert such emergencies. He cited the ongoing awareness campaigns launched by the NFA, noting that despite these efforts, the number of uncontrolled fires remains a pressing concern. The NFA aims for a 5% annual reduction in property fires, considering it a viable target in light of the persistent risks.
