The oversight of municipal projects in Fiji has reached a pivotal moment, as Local Government Minister Maciu Nalumisa has announced enhanced monitoring measures to improve accountability and transparency. Speaking during a public consultation in Lautoka, Nalumisa acknowledged the history of mismanagement in council projects and asserted the government’s commitment to prioritizing the voices of the constituents. He stated, “When we came into power, one of the main things we wanted to ensure was that the people’s voice would be heard,” emphasizing the need for transparency in local governance.
During the consultation, the minister pointed to an upcoming project spearheaded by the Lautoka City Council, which is designed to create a revenue-generating initiative intended to benefit the local community in the long term. He remarked that many municipal councils have untapped land assets that can be leveraged to foster economic development, highlighting the potential of these resources.
To further enhance project management and maintain informed oversight, a dedicated monitoring unit has been created. This unit aims to track the progress of council projects throughout the nation, enabling the government to provide timely updates on milestones and contractual agreements.
Chairperson of the Lautoka City Council, Taitusi Rasoki, reaffirmed the commitment to due process regarding a proposed $5 million development near Coronation Park. Rasoki clarified that no approvals for the project have been granted thus far and actively encouraged community participation, urging stakeholders to share their feedback before the upcoming deadline of November 6.
Community lawyer Shalend Krishna pointed out that the regulations governing recent projects greatly differ from those that applied to earlier developments, such as Shirley Park and Tappoo City. This shift indicates a greater level of scrutiny surrounding current undertakings to ensure adherence to legal requirements.
In light of community concerns regarding environmental impacts and the potential alteration of green spaces, Minister Nalumisa reiterated the importance of adhering to due process and fostering community engagement. The government is actively seeking public input through consultations, aiming to find a balance between development and the residents’ desire to preserve accessible green areas.
