Residents of Lautoka are calling on the government to enhance support for drug users through comprehensive rehabilitation programs. This initiative, they believe, could not only provide second chances for individuals but also benefit families, reduce crime rates, and bolster community safety. A recent consultation in Lautoka centered around a proposed rehabilitation framework that would allow drug users to choose rehabilitation over punitive court actions.
The community has shown strong support for this initiative, recognizing its potential to deter at-risk youth from drug misuse and lessen long-term health implications. Selwa Chand, manager of the Lautoka Girmit Center, recounted a distressing incident in which a young girl unknowingly brought drugs to school, highlighting the exploitation risks faced by vulnerable children. Chand emphasized the importance of protecting minors and integrating safety measures into any rehabilitation programs implemented.
Inspector Jemesa Lave from the Ministry of Policing has confirmed that upcoming legislation will clearly differentiate between commercial traffickers and casual users. He pointed to successful international models where individuals arrested for drug-related offenses are offered rehabilitation rather than prosecution, coupled with ongoing support to facilitate their reintegration into society.
“One of the innovations we intend to introduce in the legislation is a rehabilitation plan, allowing users to choose between a rehabilitative approach or punitive measures,” stated Inspector Lave. This shift in policy is aimed at creating a more compassionate framework for dealing with drug use.
Additionally, local resident Tarlo Chand voiced concerns regarding the exposure of youth to drugs and expressed frustration with authorities who face challenges in acting without definitive evidence. His comments highlighted the pressing need for both protective measures and rehabilitation initiatives.
