As the Christmas season approaches, trade opportunities typically flourish for local farmers, but vendors like 42-year-old Nai Vuniwaiwai are grappling with significant challenges, particularly at the Lautoka minibus stand. Ms. Vuniwaiwai, alongside other vendors, made the trek from Naveiveiwali, Wainibuka in Tailevu late Sunday night, only to arrive in Lautoka on Monday to face inadequate infrastructure and a lack of shelter amidst rainy weather.
Upon their arrival, Ms. Vuniwaiwai noted, “We arrived in Lautoka on Monday, and we timed the bad weather; there was nothing organized for us, not even a makeshift shelter.” This lack of resources forced the vendors into a cramped situation, where they had to compete for space with others instead of having designated areas for their needs. Frustration rose among the group, particularly as they were unable to access the main market, a privilege reserved for more established vendors.
“We wanted to go to the market, but we were told it’s only for the more established vendors, that’s why we were selling at the minibus stand,” she explained. The vendors offer a range of goods, including melons, dalo, rourou, kumala, cassava, and chilies, yet they had to sleep outdoors to protect their produce.
“Although we could have taken shelter at the mall, we were worried about our produce, so we ended up sleeping beside our bags and produce,” Ms. Vuniwaiwai added. Despite these challenging circumstances, the high demand for fresh produce in Lautoka makes the trip worthwhile for these farmers.
Their dedication shines through as Ms. Vuniwaiwai asserted, “We get a lot of good business selling here, that’s why we’ve travelled from Tailevu to be here. We only request that we be given a better place to sell.” She called for more adequate accommodations and greater recognition from the local council, stressing the need for support, especially during the festive season when vendors like her arrive in larger numbers.
This scenario highlights the resilience of local farmers and the urgent need for infrastructure improvements to support their essential contributions to the local economy. By enhancing conditions for these vendors, Lautoka can cultivate a more welcoming environment that not only benefits the vendors but also enriches the community during this bustling time of year.
